Rebuilding Mark's Scotty Entrance Door
Last
Updated: 10/10/2008
This is what the door looks like after removing the latch
mechanism.
Removing the old window, assuming that its not already
broken.
Make sure you use old popsicle sticks, NO METAL,
you will break the glass!
So I got the top off. Bent down all the metal tabs around
the outside of door.
Many Scotty owners seem to just bend
down the metal, then slide out the top, I
was unable to do
this because the metal was stuck on too well, and didn't
slide.
I think someone must have already tried fixing the door,
this was a different
type of wood stuck in under the door
lock on the bottom side of the door.
OK, all the corrugated cardboard has been removed. The new
wood has been cut
to fit in the door. The wood piece along
the hinge side was still in fairly
good shape, so I cut
the rest of the wood to fit.
I then glued down the wood to the metal frame with panel
glue and then
clamped it all in place. Then did the same
with the top metal shell, and
clamped that all in place and
bent the tabs back over to secure it.
For some reason I
did not take any further pictures. But it was fairly
streight
forward to put the corrugated cardboard back in
place, it was in fairly good condition.
And I then put the
latch and hinge back in place and put everything back on
the Scotty
The last thing I had to do was put the glass
back in place. I spent about an hour attemping,
this but
was unable to get it back in place. I had this same problem
when I replaced the
broken glass when I first purchased the
Scotty. Both that time and this time I ended
up taking the
door to our local glass shop (www.michaelsglass.com)
and they very
nicely installed the glass for me, for about
$25. I still think its one of the best
investments I've
ever made! Saved me time and peace of mind.
Although I'm
not possitive about this, they might be able to do
mail-order if you
need a place to buy safety glass, or
want to have them install the glass on your door.
